Functional Medicine

What is Functional Medicine?

Functional Medicine is a patient-centered approach to health care.  It is a scientific-based, systems approach that focuses on the underlying causes of clinical symptoms. Our functional medicine practitioner collaborates with your primary provider to offer expanded options of treatments for you, which may include the following therapies:

  • Massage

  • Reiki

  • Acupuncture

  • Nutritional

  • Vitamins

  • Minerals

  • Supplements

  • Exercise

  • Other integrative therapies

The two principles of Functional Medicine is the removal of the underlying causes of body systems dysfunction and restoring optimal function.

Will I continue to see my original provider (doctor or nurse practitioner)?

Yes, our functional medicine practitioner works in conjunction with your primary provider. The functional medicine plan of care, including the additional therapies suggested or initialed by our practitioner, is communicating to your provider.  Your providers must understand all therapies involved in your treatment plan.

What should I expect at a Functional Medicine appointment?

Our functional medicine practitioner will go over a thorough medical and personal history. A few questionnaires must be completed, either before the appointment or with your practitioner at your initial appointment. After the initial assessment, our practitioner may order diagnostic studies via blood, urine, and/or stool samples. Our practitioner may offer suggestions for supplements at the initial visit; however, once the diagnostic review is complete, the supplement suggestions may change. Follow up appointments will be needed at various stages of therapy to monitor your response to therapy.

What does the Functional Medicine practitioner address?

Our functional medicine practitioner will delve into possible causes of physiology stress that may lead to functional disturbances within the body. After reviewing these stressors, our practitioner will identify which may contribute to a weakness or a compromised function within your body and plan treatment accordingly.  The possible causes of physiologic stress include, but is not limited to:

  • Oxidative stress

  • Nutritional imbalances

  • Digestive and intestinal imbalances

  • Impaired detoxification

  • Hormonal and endocrine imbalances

  • Immune dysfunction

  • Inflammatory imbalances

What is the benefit of Functional Medicine?

The benefits come when your bodily systems begin to work within a healthy range again.  These benefits may include:

  • Improved digestion

  • Improved bowel elimination

  • Improved blood sugar regulation

  • Reduced inflammation

  • Improved the stress response
